Just think about it for a minute; you prepared for this day for months in advance. You did your promotions, you put together some joint ventures, you set up a number of affiliates to promote your product, you finalized the product and then you got your site up and running and the customers are coming in like you would have never imagined.
People are opting in to your mailing list to get free downloads, they're signing up for your newsletter and more importantly, they are purchasing your products. Then all of a sudden it happens, you start to get a lot of emails from potential customers saying the site is down.
Your site has crashed so what do you do?
I know what you do. First you shout out a few explicit words then you call your hosting company.
Has this happened to you? I hope not but there are some ways you can try to avoid this and the main thing you need to do is to find a reliable hosting company.
Not all companies are created equal and if you do your research you'll find that out. Companies offer many different options and have different price points but you have to make sure that first and foremost, they are reliable. It doesn't make since to purchase hosting for $4.99/month and the site is constantly crashing. It's not worth having your business in limbo.
Here are a few steps you need to take when deciding if this company is the right one for you.
1. Do your due diligence. Find people who have used the service. There are many forums out there and if you post something to those forums I'm sure you'll get the answers you are looking for. Also, check out the company thoroughly. Make sure they have a good track record. And if the company is new make sure the owner, founders, president and anyone else responsible for starting the company is not new to the game. You can't rely on some newbies when it comes to your website hosting service.
2. Make sure they have "live" people working in customer service. When you have a pressing issue and you need to talk to someone, you may not be able to submit a support ticket and wait the next day or two for a response. Sometimes you need to speak to someone or at least have a live chat with them immediately.
I had an issue with one of my blogs and when I contacted customer service via live chat, they immediately fixed the problem. The good thing about it was that the hosting company wasn't at fault. I did something in my cpanel that caused the problem and my site was back up within 1 minute.
3. Make sure they offer reseller hosting. This means that not only can you host your sites but you can also host other people's sites for an additional stream of income. The benefit to doing this in addition to making some additional income is you don't have to run your own server and start your own web hosting services from the beginning. You can get connected to a reliable company that provides the resources and support you need to keep your customers satisfied.
These are just a few nuggets to look for in a hosting company but I want to stress to you to do your due diligence and don't be sucked into the cheapest thing you can find.
To YOUR Success,
Rodney
